is a tumultuous year in the small Trinidadian island of El Caracol. In
the sultry heat of the dry season a young orphan, Theo, is sent to live
with the island's doctor, Vincent Metivier. The doctor knows little of
Theo's past, only that it has been troubled and that he now needs love
and attention. |

Lawrence Scott is from Trinidad and Tobago, resident in London. He is the author of the much-acclaimed novel Witchbroom and Ballad for the New World which contains the award-winning short story The House of Funerals. Scott is a regular contributor to BBC Radio 4's The Short Story. He now combines his writing with teaching English. |
